INTRODUCTION TO PRECISION OPTICS IN KEENE

Keene has a uniquely interesting and current precision optics manufacturing starting with American Optical. Currently, there are five large companies producing precision optics and assemblies in Keene. This talk given by Bruce Norlund will describe what the Keene companies do now and how they got to where they are today. The talk will also explain much of the jargon: optics, diamond turning, and interferometry. Finally, the talk will describe how to find a job and career options.

This talk is an 82-slide power point presentation which takes approximately 60 minutes, accompanied by physical examples of diamond-turned optics.

Bruce Norlund is a retired Mechanical Engineer who lives in Keene. He has worked in opto-mechanical design and management - at Corning Specialty Materials for 13 years and at Ametek Precitech for 7 years.

Attention: Graduating Seniors with an interest in Engineering

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers - Monadnock Chapter 124 is pleased to offer the $1,500 John I. McKenney/SME Chapter 124 Engineering Scholarship for a graduating senior pursuing a career in engineering.

Engineering efforts have enhanced the quality of life since the beginning of time. Chapter 124 would like to support those who will make contributions to our future quality of living in our country and the world.

Enclosed is a copy of the application. Please make a copy for each interested student. We would appreciate you making this available to all students planning on pursuing engineering in college. The criteria for acceptance are described on the application.

SME Monadnock Chapter 124 in partnership with SolidVision, a Value Added Reseller for SolidWorks, will be donating SolidWorks Engineering software to all applicants, along with a 4 hour intro training program for all applicants.

The student who wins the $1,500 scholarship will also receive SolidWorks software and will be invited, along with his or her family, to the SME awards dinner in May.

Our scholarship committee will complete their review of the applications by April 28, 2011 and shall inform the guidance department of the results.
